"Elizabeth Cope Unframed’
Gallery 1 Opened Saturday, 5th June 2010 Official opening and painting workshop conducted by Elizabeth Cope
Elizabeth Cope advocates a spontaneous approach to making art, favouring fresh, dynamic brushwork, chance effects and often bizarre juxtapositions. She disapproves of working ‘within the frame’ because this ‘cuts away other forces’. Thus the paintings seem to flow out into their hinterland: a still life will not stay still; wildlife teems and outrides the frame; the steady gaze from a portrait invites dialogue. The artist has spoken of her refusal to settle for the ‘pretty’ in her art. Lulled by the beautiful colours and vibrant energy we are surprised by the emblems of danger or cruelty therein. Within bright decorative power we find the black comedy of a dysfunctional relationship or the wound of mortality - her Mediterranean landscape of sensuous pleasure incorporating the tradition of vanitas from Northern Europe. These paintings are life-affirming in the sense that living with death in mind is; they are neither hedonistic nor morbid, having a sense of molecular whizzing that links them with the life force itself.
