It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year – for Christmas Movies.

When we mention Christmas we usually end up talking about the family coming home, friends we’ll meet, or what food and drink we’ll go through. The one other item that enters conversations (some of us even look forward to them) is Christmas movies.

Some people hate them, some people laugh at them but I think they are a special part of the Christmas feeling. So whether you like it or not, you are probably going to sit-through one over the coming weeks.

Here is a suggestion to make your Christmas movie experience even better – wine. As with most things in life, wine can make them even better. I have been thinking about a novel way of presenting you with my 10 favourite Christmas movies for the last week.

I have decided to liaise with my wine-guru colleagues in Green Acres and have chosen the type of wine that I feel pairs with each movie the best. So, snuggle down and let’s pour through the list.

As there are so many movies to choose from, and everybody will have their favourites, I am going to break my list into 4 segments: Classic, Funny, Romantic and Childrens (from an adult’s viewpoint).

Classic Christmas Movies and Wine.

Heart-warming enough to feel like a big hug from Santa Claus himself; and what does Merlot feel like if not a big hug in a glass?

It’s a warm and fuzzy family tale told with a lot of class. And what wine is more warm and classy than a Pinot Noir?

For this classic tale – I’m recommending a mulled wine to cuddle up in front of the fire with. Green Acres have their own mulled wine recipe so using their own label Bordeaux wines is a good idea.

Romantic Christmas Movies and Wine.

This is maybe the ultimate romantic Christmas movie ever made. It’s full of different story themes wound around one thread of love. It’s sweet, bubbly, funny and serious; what else would you pair it with other than a Champagne Rosé?

More high heels, snow, romance, and wine drinking. I’m picking an elegant Chardonnay to pair perfectly with this romantic movie about falling in love with a stranger.

This is quite difficult actually. There are so many Christmas movies to choose from – anyway, I’m halfway there. If I leave out your favourite – I’m sorry.

Funny Christmas Movies and Wine.

You’ll need something as cheeky and energetic as a young Macaulay Culkin in this really popular, funny movie. Prosecco should do just fine.

Elf is a Will Ferrell movie, probably the most outright comedy on the list. Due to Will’s size and his sweet tooth, I think the movie deserves something big, bold and a little fruity with a hint of chocolate. A Valpolicella Ripasso should fit the bill nicely.

Any one of this Santa trilogy will do me. However, whether you were a parent or a child when the first movie came out in 1994, it brings back the happiest of memories. I agree with the team that this pairs with a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon.

Childrens Christmas Movies and Wine (for the adults).

I was trying to think of a wine that would remind me of the snowy, windswept mountains of the movie. A full and powerful Gewurztraminer from Alsace, France was recommended by James. The green coloured bottle and even the name makes this an excellent choice for me.

Who doesn’t love Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas? It manages to combine Christmas and goth and somehow make them both cool. That means that it needs something dark, something classic but something that’s still just a little fun. My colleagues suggest something red from Côtes du Rhône.

So, here are my top ten Christmas movies paired with a relevant wine to add to the experience of watching them. Enjoy ....#discovermovies #greenacresirl

Now I’m going to cheat a little. I know the title of this post refers to Christmas movies but I want to finish with a movie that I regard as one of my all-time favorites, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

I will be searching for it over Christmas and will snuggle down on the couch with a bottle of bubbles to watch it and sing along to Moon River.

In this video, Audrey Hepburn features in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In this part of the movie, Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) plays on her classical guitar and sings Moon River, a score written by Henri Mancini just for this movie.

I hope that my favourite movies and wines above have given you food for thought and brighten up your Christmas movie experience.
