Rod McDonald Wines

Rod McDonald isn’t just your average winemaker. Having grown up on a farm dreaming of being a farmer, he packed his small bag and headed for the bright lights of Hawke’s Bay. After 9 years as winemaker at Vidal Estate he was awarded New Zealand Winemaker of the Year – no small achievement. Not long afterwards, armed with a slightly bigger bag and some ideas on how Hawke’s Bay wines could look, he set up Rod McDonald Wines. Now he has some of the best pieces of dirt in the region and, with the winemaking home at The Hawke’s Bay Wine Company and the very cool cellar door on the coast at his Te Awanga Estate, Rod produces an amazing family of wines.
The Te Awanga Estate wines represent the special ground on which they are grown. From volcanic loess soils above a shallow clay pan which reduces the vigour and increases the concentration, this range of single estate wines show the intensity that a coastal climate and its associated sea breezes and cooler nights bring.
Rod’s “One Off” range does exactly what it says on the can. Small production, limited parcels of exciting stuff. Vintage-dependent, this can range from anything from a Gisborne Albarino to a Hawke’s Bay “Super Tuscan”. No-one is breaking ground like Rod is at the moment.
